Tool settings

Extract selectable text from PDF pages.

Page 1 preview

Choose the pages you care about and this tool reads their text layer, then shows the result for copying or as a .txt download. It all happens in the browser tab, so the document is never uploaded. Layout is not carried over: each page arrives as one continuous run of words.

Stays on your device

Your own browser parses the PDF. There is no upload step, no server copy to worry about afterwards, and no account to create before you start.

Pages you pick

Every page starts selected. Click a page to drop it from the run, or press Clear and pick only what you need, in document order with a blank line between pages.

Copy or download

The text lands in a panel on the page. Copy text puts the whole run on your clipboard, or you save it as a plain .txt file to keep and reuse.

How to extract text from a PDF

  1. Open your PDF

Drop the file onto the tool or pick it from your device. Your browser reads it in place, so the PDF itself never goes over the network.

  2. Choose the pages

All pages start selected. Click any page to deselect it, or press Clear to start from none, then press Run tool to read whatever is still selected.

  3. Copy or save it

Read the result in the panel below, use Copy text to paste it straight into something else, or download the plain .txt file.

Extract PDF text FAQs

Why does my scanned PDF come out empty?

Open the PDF in any viewer and try to select a paragraph: if nothing highlights, that page is only an image with no text layer, and there is no character recognition in this product. Such pages report that no selectable text was found. Export them with PDF to Images and use an OCR service. PDF to Images

Is the original layout preserved?

No. The pieces of text on a page are joined with single spaces and repeated whitespace is collapsed, so columns, indents and line breaks are gone. A blank line between pages is the only structure that survives.

Can it extract tables from a PDF?

Not as tables. Cells come out as one continuous sequence of words with no rows or columns left, which will not paste cleanly into a spreadsheet. For grids, expect to rebuild the structure yourself afterwards.

Can I convert the PDF to Word or DOCX?

No. A plain .txt file is the only output here, with no DOCX, Excel or HTML export. Plain text is easy to reuse anywhere, but styling is not part of it, so any formatting gets redone in your editor.

Can I get the text from only a few pages?

Yes. Every page starts selected, so press Clear and click just the pages you want, or deselect the few you do not. The result contains those pages only, in the order they appear in the file.

Does it work on a password-protected PDF?

Not while the file is still encrypted, as this tool has no password field. Remove the protection with Unlock PDF first, using the password you already know, then come back and extract the text. Unlock PDF

Is my document uploaded to a server?

No. The text is read out inside your browser tab, so the PDF never crosses the network and no server keeps a copy. There is no file size cap either; a very large document is limited only by your device's memory.
