PDF Head edits your PDFs inside your own browser. This page explains the few things that do leave your device, and why.
Your files
Every tool on this site runs inside your browser tab. The PDFs and images you open are read by your own device, and the finished file is written straight back to your downloads. The files themselves never reach our servers or our billing provider.
Two tools park a file in your browser's local storage so you do not lose it while moving between pages. A PDF you pick on one page is held for up to 10 minutes while the tool opens, and a scan in progress is held for up to 24 hours so you can come back to it. Both stay on your device, and both are erased once they are used or once that time is up.
If we ever add a tool that has to send a file to a server, that tool will tell you before anything is uploaded.
What stays in your browser
PDF Head keeps a few small things on your device: whether you chose the light or dark theme and a short-lived flag that finishes restoring a purchase in another tab. The services we use to measure usage store their own identifiers here too. Clearing this site's data in your browser removes all of it.
Cookies
We set one cookie of our own, pdf_head_user. It holds a random ID — not your name, not your email — so a purchase stays attached to this browser. It lasts a year, cannot be read by scripts running on the page, and is only ever sent back to us. If you delete it, a purchase has to be restored by email.
The analytics providers set cookies and storage entries of their own, under their own names. Blocking those scripts, or clearing this site's data, removes them.
How we measure usage
We use third-party analytics providers to understand how people use the site, so we can make it clearer and faster. One of them also records a replay of how you scroll and click on a page, which is how we find the steps where people get stuck.
These providers see which pages you open, which tools you use, which buttons you press, and rough details about your device and location. When you open a file, all they receive is how many files there were, whether they were PDFs or images, and a rough size range. Your file names and the contents of your files are never sent to them.
Measurement starts as soon as a page loads. If you would rather not be measured, turn on your browser's tracking protection or use a content blocker — either one stops these scripts from loading, and the tools keep working.
Buying and restoring Pro
Payments run through AppHub, the service that handles our plans and checkout, and its payment processor. We never see or store your card details.
So your plan can be checked, your browser tells AppHub the random ID from the cookie above and the country your connection appears to come from. This happens on every page, not only when you upgrade. Your email address is added only when you buy or restore Pro, so the purchase is attached to something you can recover later. Your files are never part of any of this.
We use your email address for one thing: sending the single-use link that restores Pro on another device. To keep that form from being abused, we briefly keep a scrambled one-way fingerprint of the address and of your IP address. Neither can be turned back into the original.
How long things are kept
Files parked in your browser are erased within 10 minutes or 24 hours, depending on the tool. The cookie expires after a year unless you delete it sooner. Your purchase record stays with AppHub for as long as your access lasts, and each analytics provider keeps its own data under its own rules.
Your choices
You can erase everything we keep on your device at any time by clearing this site's data in your browser, and you can block measurement with tracking protection or a content blocker.
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to ask for a copy of the personal data held about you, to have it corrected, or to have it deleted. The only data tied to you personally is the email address and purchase history held by AppHub.
Children
PDF Head is not aimed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect anything from them.
