Unlock PDF takes the encryption off a document you can already open, so the copy you keep stops asking for a password. You type the password once, press Run, and qpdf decrypts the file inside your own browser tab.

This tool decrypts, it does not crack. Enter the exact password the file was protected with: an empty field is refused, and a wrong password is reported as wrong.
qpdf compiled to WebAssembly does the work on your own machine. No account and no size cap, so a heavy file depends only on the memory your browser can give it.
Drop the encrypted file into the tool. There is no page grid to render first, so protected documents load without any complaint.
Put the password that opens the file into the single Password field. It has to be exact, because nothing here guesses or recovers it for you.
Press Run tool. qpdf rewrites the document without its encryption layer, then a download button appears and saves the copy with -unlocked.pdf on the end of the name.
Then this tool cannot help. There is no recovery, no cracking and no brute force here, and decryption only runs with the correct password. If the file came from someone else, ask them for the password or a fresh copy.
Taking protection off your own files, or files you have permission to change, is ordinary document handling. Because the password is mandatory, the tool never opens a document you did not already have access to.
Only when you have the password. Decryption drops the whole encryption layer, permission flags included, but a file that opens with no password and merely blocks printing gives this tool nothing to work with, because an empty Password field is refused.
qpdf tried it and the file refused it. Check the keyboard layout, the capitals and any trailing space, then run it again. The same message also covers a damaged file, or encryption qpdf cannot read, and no output file is written either way.
Yes. Unlocking leaves you with an open copy, and the Protect PDF tool sets a new password on that copy. Until you do, treat the unlocked file as readable by anyone who gets hold of it. Protect PDF
No. The decryption happens in JavaScript and WebAssembly on the page you have open, and the app has no path for uploading a document at all. The password stays in the form field until you leave the page.
